Sherpa Butter Tea
Sherpa Butter Tea
Butter tea is a very popular drink of the Sherpa people in Nepal. First time I’ve tasted it during our expedition to Everest Base Camp in 2013. I was impressed by it’s unique taste and properties. Sherpa tea is exactly what you need in the mountains. It is incredibly satiating thanks to the fat, and salt helps retain water in the body during the serious physical exertion.
Originally Sherpa tea is made from 3 ingredients – black tea, yak butter and salt. Nothing complicated. Just replace yak butter with ghee, coconut butter or MCT powder.

you'll need:
1 teaspoon Swerve sweetener
1/4 teaspoon pink Himalayan salt
1 tablespoon ghee
1 teabag black tea
at home:
Mix all dry ingredients in a small zip lock bag.
Pack the ghee and teabag separately.
on the trail:
Bring 1 cup water to a boil.
Pour dry Sherpa Butter Tea mixture along with ghee into a mug.
Mix to a smooth paste with 1/4 cup of boiling water.
Add rest of the water and whisk for 20 seconds.
Add the teabag and let steep for a couple of minutes.
Waste of a teabag that way. Put it in the boiling water while you’re pasting the rest of the mix. It should be allowed to infuse without all the other stuff getting in the mesh of the bag and hindering it.
