Hearty and spicy beef stew for a cold night out in the wilderness

you'll need:

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 tablespoon roast beef gravy mix
Salt
1/3 cup couscous
1 tablespoon ghee
1 small shallot
2 baby carrot
1/2 can beef chunks (about 100g/3.53oz)

at home:

Combine all spices and dry gravy mix in a small zip-lock bag.
Put couscous into another zip-lock bag.
Pack other ingredients separately.

on the trail:

Bring 1/3 cup water to a boil; season with salt.
Pour hot salted water into the bag with couscous, stir and let stand 5 minutes.
Peel and slice carrot, chop the onion.
Melt the ghee in a pot, add onions and carrots; cook until soft.
Blend in beef chunks.
Combine gravy mix with ½ cup of water in a mug.
Pour gravy into the pot and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
Simmer for 1 minute, then remove from heat.
Fluff couscous with a fork; top with beef sauce and serve.

    Your picture has chickpeas but they are not in the recipe. Do you use dehydrated chickpeas for this?

      Hi Melinda! You are right, this recipe do not contain chickpeas. I’ve added them for experiment to make more nutritious meal. As this meal wasn’t dehydrated, I’ve used canned chickpeas.
